Sharing Stories - Burnie City Council

When Burnie City Council CEO Andrew Wardlaw said 2020 was my turn on the Acting General Manager roster, I had some trepidations, as there is a history of “things happening” when Andrew goes on leave.

He assured me, “I have only a couple of short trips planned in 2020”. So, with that in mind, I said OK, thinking how bad could it be? Well, the lesson is: “Don’t let the Boss go on Holiday!”

A lot of change has been imposed on us recently to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our community. It is an uncertain time for many, both personally and at work.

Government restrictions have limited the operation of certain businesses and activities and Council has been impacted by closure of various buildings and facilities.

Declining customer contact, reduced demand for some services, and facility closures means we are unable to carry out some tasks and affected staff have been flexible in refocussing their efforts on other suitable productive and effective tasks. Some staff are also now working from home.

I thank everybody across our workforce for their support and encouragement during my time in the Acting GM role and acknowledge your patience, understanding and commitment to Council in adapting to change and assisting each other through this challenge.

Welcome back Andrew!
