The Hon Julie Bishop is the 13th Chancellor of the Australian National University, the first female to hold the role. She also served as Australia’s 28th Minister for Foreign Affairs, as well as the first female Deputy Leader of the Federal Liberal Party.

The Australian National University was founded in 1946 to help rebuild Australia in the aftermath of the Second World War. It was predominantly a research institution to ensure our nation was set up for prosperity and success long into the future. Now a world-class research and teaching university, ANU has supported these ambitions over the past almost 75 years.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has meant that there has never been a more pressing time for ANU to fulfil its mission.

In contributing to the national response to this challenge, we are providing Government with vital expertise on how we can strive to eradicate COVID-19 from our community, as well as roll out frontline medical and health responses and reinvigorate our economy after the restrictions are lifted.

We are also helping Australians acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workforce of the future. As part of the Government’s Higher Education support package, ANU is providing a range of certificate courses from data engineering to environmental management to languages.

ANU has also taken steps to provide greater certainty to thousands of school leavers across the country, whose final year of high school has been disrupted by COVID-19, by allowing them to apply to our degree programs in 2020 based on their Year 11 results, should they choose.

With an alumni of outstanding scholars, scientists and leaders, ANU remains a dynamic national institution. It attracts some of the best and brightest students from across Australia and overseas, who have the opportunity to receive a first class education with a unique on-campus living experience in our national capital.
