No two days look the same in this role. One morning you’re on site inspecting a build, the next you’re interpreting legislation, gathering evidence or talking a resident through their options. As our Compliance Officer, you’ll investigate building, planning and plumbing matters across the city and decide the right course of action, whether that’s education, mediation or enforcement.

This is a job for a practical problem-solver who reads legislation as well as they read people. You'll work with residents, builders, designers and consultants every day, so calm judgement and clear communication matter as much as technical knowledge. Key responsibilities of this position include:

• Investigating possible and identified breaches of building, planning and plumbing legislation, and determining appropriate enforcement action where required.
• Preparing and processing compliance notices, orders, emergency orders, infringement notices and related documentation.
• Monitoring and maintaining accurate records of investigations, notices, orders and enforcement activity.
• Providing accurate and timely technical advice to applicants, residents, consultants, developers and other stakeholders.
• Conducting inspections, gathering evidence and supporting mediation, hearings and other compliance processes where required.
• Educating the community and industry professionals to support better understanding of building, planning and plumbing legislation and processes.

About You
We are looking for someone who demonstrates, through behaviour, an alignment and an understanding of Our Values and has the following qualifications, skills and experience:

• Strong experience applying statutory requirements under building, planning and plumbing legislation, including the Building Act 2016, Tasmania Building Regulations 2016, National Construction Code 2022, Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 and the Tasmania Planning Scheme.
• The ability to interpret legislation, conduct inspections and investigations, gather evidence and support enforcement action where needed.
• Well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including conflict resolution, negotiation, customer service and the ability to remain calm and respectful under pressure.
• Considerable experience in the building or design industry, local or state government, or a statutory control environment.
• Qualifications in Building, Building Design, Town Planning or a related discipline, and a Certificate IV in Government Investigations or the ability to obtain.
• A White Card, or the ability to obtain one, and a current driver licence.
