Napranum Aboriginal Shire, an area of 1995 sq. km, is north-west and north-east of Weipa, Cape York Peninsula. The Shire is in several parts. It was named after the Napranum township which is about 15 km south-east of Weipa on Embley River inlet.

The population of Napranum is approximately 1000, there are 256 homes in Napranum, and the majority of these homes come under social housing. Council are managing the home ownership scheme in Napranum and the first home was sold in Napranum in late 2016.

Council are undertaking a number of projects at the moment including the upgrade of the Napranum Boat ramp, development of a foreshore facility and upgrades to local infrastructure within the community.

Council has responsibility for a Preschool, Childcare Facility, Aged Care Facility, Library and Post Office. There is also a privately run Supermarket and an Art Gallery in Napranum and there are major plans to foster and develop the artistic community.

The Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council consists of the Mayor and four councillor’s. The Executive Management Team is made up of the Chief Executive Officer and five senior managers responsible for Finance, Works Department, Aged Care, Childcare & Preschool and Human Resources.

The annual budget for the Council is approx. $15 million with a staff establishment of around 100 people.

Accountable to Council, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is Council’s principal staff officer, exercising overall management responsibility for Council’s operations. The main responsibilities of the CEO is to act as the primary link between Councillors and the organisation and for providing assistance to Councillors in developing policy and leadership to staff in achieving Council objectives. It is imperative the CEO continues to develop and maintain a mutually respectful and communicative relationship with the Mayor and Council. The successful appointee will have full oversight of the financial management of the Council as well as communicating and promoting Council’s policies to the community. There will be a strong focus from council to build the community’s connection to art and
culture and foster tourism opportunities in the region.
